Map of Skidgel/Cannery Lot.
Highlighted in bold line, land owned by the Town of Freedom, total 14 acres.

The Freedom Community Development Advisory Committee (CDAC) was formed under the direction of the Select Board to oversee cleanup and determine the best use of the former Skidgel’s lot at the site of the old Monmouth Cannery property in Freedom Village. Over the past year, the property was cleaned up through state grants and a few additional smaller parcels were acquired at minimal cost to the citizens of Freedom. A total of 14 acres now includes the current Public Works Dept (town garage area and sand/salt shed) as well as a large cement pad from the old cannery, two drilled wells, 3 phase power and more. There are also wetland areas feeding into Sandy Stream and other cleared land.  A survey is underway and will be completed this spring.

The Committee is seeking resident and community input through a survey about the potential uses of the site that can be undertaken for the betterment of the citizens of Freedom. These might include economic and business development (including agriculture-related businesses), recreational development or environmental uses and improvement.  We truly value your feedback before proceeding with any recommendation or proposal. This is simply a survey and not binding on anyone. The survey will allow you to voice concerns or offer alternatives to ideas presented.

Feel free to visit the cleaned-up site, it is next to the town garage behind Freedom General Store. The attached illustration outlines the key features of the site as they are currently known. A larger photographic map of the site will soon be on display at the town office.

PLEASE complete the survey

We value your input.
